Osnovna skola Vrgorac
"Osnovna škola Vrgorac" is a primary school placed in Vrgorac, a small town of some 2500 people in the South of Croatia. We are a public school from grade 1 to 8 with 552 pupils and 63 teachers. Compulsory school subjects are Mathematics, Art, Music, Croatian and English language, History, Geography, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Design and Technology, Physical education. Optional school subjects are German, Computer Science and Religion.
We have 38 different classes including two departments for pupils with special needs with two special needs teachers, 1 educator, 1 school psychologist, 1 speech pathologist and a school librarian. There are 15 SEN students in our school and 7 disadvantaged students. Our school, including our library is well equipped. Our institution is also part of the international community of Eco schools and conducts many activities in connection with ecology. We also take part in the project "Schools for Africa" for years now, our pupils show their mathematical skills on international contests on a regular basis, for 18 years we have been organizing a nationwide (sometimes even international) art and literature prize competition "Tin i ja". Extracurricular activities in our school are organized in literature sections, drama and poetry group, school paper section (our school paper is called "Školska Oaza", we publish one a year), ensemble and block flute section, a mandolin section, tourist section, journalistic section, a school singing section. Our pupils can choose from following after-school activities: futsal, handball, kickboxing, folklore sections, music school and dance school.
Our institution has some experience in international projects of this type and scale. We have adopted the European School Development Strategy with the aim of more active engagement in EU projects. Our goal is to improve the language competences of students and teachers as well as to respect the diversity, culture and tradition of other peoples of Europe and the rest of the world.
We are eager to continue on our path to improve and modernize our institution.
With our activities we have gained some experience with which we can assist in better project realization in terms of entrepreneurship, cooperation with the local community and tourist board. Because five years ago we have established a school cooperation with the sections pottery, sewing, knitting and gardening, and with tourist section we participate in important activities of the city and the tourist board.
