    IES Bahía de Almería

    IES Bahía de Almería

The school IES Bahía de Almería is a public secondary school situated in the urban area of the city of Almería ( population 190.000 ), South coast of Spain. It has 55 teachers and 600 students of two levels:

    • ESO (compulsory secondary education) which is divided into four levels (1st to 4th). Students are aged from 12-13 to 15-16. Each level has 3 or 4 classes. In total 390 students
    • Bachillerato (high school), with two specific groups: Science and Technology and Social Science and it is divided into two levels (1st and 2nd) with 4 and 3 classes respectively. Students aged 16-18. In total there are 210 students.

Our school is located in a moderately populated area of the city. Our students come mainly from young families from middle class which live nearby. The demography of the school population is influenced by a low number of foreign immigrants, nevertheless the school cooperate with our local and regional istitutions to projects that aim to integrate immigrants. Most families of this area care a lot about their children education but some of our students belong to families with social and economical problems so with a disadvantaged background where the school represents for them the only place where they can share their ideas and learn about any cultural topic It is a bilingual school where English language is used in different subjects such as P.E., Biology, Geography, Technology , Math and Art. During the school year, the school develops a lot of projects, financed by national and regional institutions. The school uses new technologies in learning process, every classroom has got an Interactive whiteboard (IWB) and teachers use electronic register . One of the most important aims of our school is the attention to diversity and integration (inclusive education).

We give our students a quality education and an integral formation with solid ethical and democratic values in which the ICT and bilingualism are essential in every stage of the process. Our main goal is to give them a more attractive education, innovative teaching, recogniting and validating competences which can in some cases prevent school early leaving and for this reason no choice to get a job. Our school involved in KA2 projects that has been giving to all the teaching members of the school a working experince related to European projects. We have a very good department of ICT which can support all activities involved in the project with experience and competence. As a coordinator school of this project we are highly determined to do our best in order to reach all the objectives assumed

The school is located in a privileged natural environment, almost unique in Europe, giving the partnership a real added value. Located in a unique heritage triangle, among Málaga, Granada and Murcia, represents the Southeast corner of the Iberian Peninsula. In the European context, the south-western corner of Europe was also the last place of Muslim presence in Europe. The southern border of Europe stands here and was defended against the Muslim invasion for over 200 years (the conquest of Granada, the battle of Lepanto). So it is a good place from which we can ponder what its values are, how to preserve and further develop them in our current context of immigration. It is also a challenge for the inclusion of an increasing number of immigrants who sail into kickboats, or simply arrive at our airports and ports. Taking part in an international project will, therefore, help to boost our language concept and integration as well as to fight anti-European, national feelings, which have recently grown stronger. Additionally, the province of Almería offers a particular agricultural method that has caused the greatest improvement in the economic growth of the area: these are plastic greenhouses, which provide thousands of jobs and a sustainable and healthy agricultural model. Our school is just starting a K229 Erasmus+ project on orienteering sports.

Our Erasmus team is made up of 10 teachers who work in international programmes. We hold meetings once a month. Next year, bilingual teaching will include the last year of compulsory education (4ºESO). So bilingual teaching will be established in the 4 years of compulsory education (12-16 years old students). Within this new framework, a larger number of colleagues will be able to step in and be actively involved in our bilingual project. In conclusion, we hope that the project proposed here has an impact in the school and in its school community and also provides a inspiration to the students on how to preserve our natural and historical heritage along with critical thinking and  the means to solve problems using teamwork strategies.

We think this will guarantee solid and innovative learning for our new European students generations. IES Bahía de Almería will host the fourth learning, teaching, and training activity and arrange, design and maintain the project's website and include the eTwinning platform run by Arsakeio Gymnasium."
